TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The head of Pegatron (和碩) emphasized on Tuesday (Nov. 12) the role of nuclear energy in reducing carbon emissions and combating inflation in Taiwan. Pegatron Chairman Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢), highlighted how nuclear power could lower electricity prices, making it a crucial factor in maintaining the competitiveness of Taiwan's industries.

Tung pointed out that lower carbon emissions would decrease the carbon tax on exported products, benefiting the industrial sector. He supported Academia Sinica President James C. Liao's (廖俊智) call to prioritize non-carbon-emitting power sources, noting that every unit of such energy is vital.

Tung warned that further electricity price adjustments might exacerbate inflation, as Taiwan's rates have already aligned with South Korea and are trending higher than those in China and Southeast Asia. He reiterated that nuclear energy's importance lies in reducing electricity costs and in its non-carbon-emitting nature, which helps reduce carbon taxes and boost industrial competitiveness.

In an international context, Tung mentioned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's energy policies, which advocate for increased oil and natural gas production while dismissing climate change concerns. Tung noted these policies contradict global trends and suggested observing their implementation closely.
