TSMC opens zero-waste center in Taichung (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) launched its zero-waste manufacturing center in Taichung (台中) on Wednesday (Nov. 13), aiming to cut environmental costs by NT$15 billion annually. YP Chyn (秦永沛), executive vice president and co-chief operating officer, emphasized the pressing need for a circular economy as global resource consumption continues to rise despite growing environmental awareness.

Chyn highlighted that global raw material consumption has exceeded 500 billion metric tons over the past five years, almost matching the entire 20th century's total usage. He underscored the importance and urgency of a circular economy, necessitating swift voluntary management action plans and united efforts towards common goals.

According to Chyn, promoting a circular economy represents both a responsibility and an opportunity for TSMC. The company recognizes its mission in environmental protection and resource management, viewing the circular economy as a sustainable focus that enhances resource utilization efficiency and offers a win-win for corporate growth and environmental preservation.

Chyn explained that the zero-waste manufacturing center can reduce environmental costs by about NT$15 billion annually, including a carbon reduction benefit of 40,000 metric tons. The center is Taiwan's first to implement thin-film carbon capture technology, capturing carbon before it escapes through smokestacks during waste heat treatment. This approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions and achieves carbon reduction by nurturing greenery with waste.
