TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) announced on Thursday (Nov. 21) that Bo Guagua (薄瓜瓜), son of former prominent Chinese Communist Party member Bo Xilai (薄熙來), applied to reunite with family in Taiwan. He filed his application as a Chinese national, with no British citizenship or ID, according to the council.

Liang Wen-chieh (梁文傑), the council's deputy minister and spokesperson, confirmed during a routine press conference that Bo married a Taiwanese citizen abroad and applied for family reunion in line with standard procedures. He emphasized that Bo's surname would not influence the government's decision and that Beijing's opinions or cross-strait political considerations fall outside the review scope.

When asked if Taiwan is becoming a haven for corrupt officials from the Chinese Communist Party due to Bo's "red family" background, Liang responded that such officials prefer the United States over Taiwan. The handling of Bo's application sheds light on the council's intentions of committing to impartiality, regardless of political or familial affiliations.
