TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Thursday (Nov. 28) urged Beijing to exercise restraint during President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) upcoming visit to Pacific allies. President Lai prepares to leave on Nov. 30 for the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau, returning on Dec. 6.
Reuters reported that Beijing might conduct military exercises around Taiwan in early December. Lin highlighted the persistent threat from China, stating that the president's visits abroad have been a routine practice for many years and called for Beijing to avoid excessive actions.
The foreign minister assured that the National Security Council (國家安全會議) and relevant agencies have analyzed the situation and are prepared. Lin also noted that Taiwan's head of state last visited the region five years ago and underscored the significance of this trip as the presidents of the three Pacific allies were newly elected this year.
He also mentioned that the leaders had previously visited Taiwan for Lai's inauguration ceremonies and national day celebrations, extending invitations for reciprocal visits. Responding to inquiries about possible stopovers in Hawaii or Guam, Lin stated that the trip arrangements prioritize safety, dignity, convenience, and comfort, with the Presidential Office (總統府) responsible for transportation details.
