TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) made a brief stopover in Hawaii on Sunday, engaging in significant dialogue with the former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (裴洛西) on the phone, according to Taiwan's Presidential Office spokesperson on Monday (Dec. 2).
Presidential Office spokesperson Karen Kuo (郭雅慧) noted Pelosi emphasized Taiwan's bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress and its crucial role in Indo-Pacific security and the global economy. Pelosi welcomed President Lai's visit to the U.S. and congratulated him on his election victory. She wished him success on his upcoming trip to the Marshall Islands and other Pacific allies.
During the 20-minute conversation, both leaders addressed the issue of double taxation between Taiwan and the U.S. Pelosi acknowledged the importance of resolving this matter and expressed her hope that Taiwan will soon complete the necessary legislation.
Also, Pelosi lauded the Taiwanese people's commitment to freedom and democracy, highlighting their economic achievements. She voiced her support for Taiwan's participation in international organizations, mentioning her previous discussions with the World Health Organization and her ongoing efforts to assist Taiwan's involvement globally.
