TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) spoke with Nancy Pelosi, honorary speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, in a 20-minute phone call on Sunday (Dec. 1), alongside other American officials.
Lai began his two-day U.S. stopover in Hawaii on Saturday, transiting through the state the following day. Karen Kuo (郭雅慧), the presidential spokesperson, noted that the call adhered to the tradition of previous presidential transits.
Pelosi welcomed President Lai's visit to the United States and congratulated him on his election victory. She underscored Taiwan's vital role in the Indo-Pacific region's security and the global economy, cautioning about the severe consequences of Taiwan's absence.
Furthermore, Pelosi expressed her support for Taiwan's engagement in international organizations, referencing her advocacy for its inclusion in the World Health Organization (WHO). The conversation addressed issues like avoiding double taxation between Taiwan and the U.S., the semiconductor industry, artificial intelligence, and China's military threats.
In addition to his call with Pelosi, Lai visited the East-West Center in Hawaii, delivering an off-the-record speech on Taiwan’s role in the Indo-Pacific region to approximately 100 guests. As President Lai's tour continues, new developments in Taiwan-U.S. relations may emerge, especially in technology and security.
