TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Health Promotion Administration (HPA, 國健署) clarified Wednesday (Dec. 11) that the risks associated with in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures are low and primarily involve mild side effects. This statement comes amid growing concerns about the safety of IVF, as late marriage and childbirth trends in Taiwan have led many couples to seek artificial reproductive technologies.
The HPA emphasized that scientific evidence supports the safety of IVF treatments. However, they urged patients to maintain awareness of both physical and mental health while preventing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). This syndrome, which affects about 3% of patients, can cause symptoms like ovarian enlargement, nausea, and diarrhea and, in severe cases, lead to complications such as ascites, embolism, and kidney impairment.
To mitigate OHSS risks, the HPA recommended thorough communication with healthcare providers, adherence to follow-up appointments, and personalized treatment plans. They also highlighted the importance of healthy lifestyle habits, such as balanced nutrition, sufficient sleep, and regular exercise, for maternal and infant health.
For couples planning to conceive, the HPA advised restructuring daily routines, maintaining an ideal weight, increasing outdoor activities, and incorporating relaxation to reduce stress. They stressed the significance of avoiding tobacco and alcohol and following a balanced diet as key measures in preparation for pregnancy.
