TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) announced on Thursday (Dec. 12) that he learned of certain requirements for the Taipei-Shanghai Twin-City Forum only the day before and has yet to receive a list of supplementary documents.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) held a press conference a day earlier, approving Taipei City Government's conditional hosting of the Twin-City Forum. However, the MAC demanded that some delegation members submit additional documents and that the forum be halted if Chinese military movements intensify. They claimed to have already communicated these conditions to the Taipei City government.
Chiang stated that the MAC has approved the forum but requires it to be halted if relations worsen and some delegation members submit additional documents. He added that the city government has not yet received the MAC's official notice regarding the need for additional documents for some delegation members. Chiang added that some of these requirements were only made known to them yesterday.
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) councilors proposed not to hold the forum, with DPP spokesperson Justin Wu (吳崢) questioning Chiang's resolve. Chiang explained that the MAC's approval of the forum in Taipei indicates their recognition of the Taipei City Government's stance, urging the DPP councilors to "keep up."
