TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Tourism Administration (觀光署) remains steadfast in its goal of attracting between 7.5 million and 8 million international tourists by the end of 2024, the administration director-general said on Friday (Dec. 20).

Chou Yung-hui (周永暉) emphasized that the number of foreign visitors will surpass 7.5 million, despite earlier forecasts being adjusted downward from an initial 12 million to 10 million, and then to 7.5 million. He highlighted efforts to boost tourists' average daily spending, which currently stands at NT$5,883 (US$180), compared to the pre-pandemic figure of NT$6,374 (US$195).

He noted that Taiwan's duty-free shops offer alcohol and luxury bags at prices 20% lower than those in Thailand, and he expressed hope that expanding marketing for high-value department store goods could help extend tourists' stays and increase their spending.

The administration plans to collaborate with the Administration of Commerce, under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (經濟部商業發展署) to enhance partnerships with local enterprises, including leisure farms, tourism factories, and shopping districts. Chou stated that combining these efforts with regional tourism in the north, center, south, and east of Taiwan, along with thematic events, will strengthen the appeal to visitors.
