TAIPEI (TVBS News) — An attorney emphasized on Friday (Dec. 20) the gravity of a major corruption scandal involving former vice premier Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦), declaring that "there is no room for innocence." Cheng is accused of accepting a staggering NT$5 million bribe during his tenure as Taoyuan mayor. The case has taken a dramatic turn as those who offered the bribe have confessed and are now cooperating with authorities, setting the stage for a riveting courtroom showdown.
The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office (桃園地檢) indicted Cheng and 11 others, accusing them of corruption related to the expansion of the Linkou Industrial Area. Despite Cheng's firm denial, former Formosa Plastics Group consultant Liao Chun-song (廖俊松), his son Liao Li-ting (廖力廷), his wife, and Hou Shui-wen (侯水文) admitted guilt in court and requested leniency.
Cheng appeared in Taoyuan District Court for the first time a day earlier, presenting 20 points defending his innocence. He explained that he only discovered the money-filled bag the day after a brief meeting with Liao Chun-song. Cheng claimed he returned the bag to Liao's son upon confirming its ownership.
Cheng also addressed allegations of phone surveillance, asserting he was unaware of any wiretapping until questioned by prosecutors. He argued that if he had known, he would not have contacted Liao Li-ting, as it would imply that others involved were also monitored. According to a United Daily News (聯合新聞網) report, Attorney Ma Chai-chin (馬在勤) emphasized that the best option for Cheng might be to plead guilty, as it could lead to a reduced sentence.
