TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A survey released on Monday (Dec. 30) by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation (TPOF, 台灣民意基金會) reveals that 76.1% of respondents identify as Taiwanese, while only 10.1% see themselves as Chinese. The survey, conducted nationwide among adults over 20, indicates a significant preference for Taiwanese identity, with dual identity recognition at a mere 9%.

Foundation chairman Michael You (游盈隆) highlighted the rarity of Chinese identity surpassing dual identity. He believed that in the struggle between Taiwanese and Chinese identities, Taiwanese identity had achieved an overwhelming victory. The survey also found a strong Taiwanese identity among 54.5% of respondents and a moderate Taiwanese identity among 21.6%, contrasting sharply with the 3.5% who strongly identify as Chinese.

You noted, "In today's Taiwan, Taiwanese identity is the choice of more than three-quarters of the population, an 'overarching' single national identity." The findings suggest a stable trend compared to a previous survey in June, with only slight shifts in identity preferences. You designed and analyzed this survey, which Focus Survey Research (山水民意公司) executed through telephone interviews. Conducted from Dec. 9-11, the survey involved 1,083 valid samples using dual-frame random sampling.
