TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) warned on Thursday (Jan. 9) that a new wave of cold air has moved south, bringing wet and cold conditions to northern Taiwan. According to CWA, daytime temperatures range from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, while central and southern regions and Hualien and Taitung will see 20 to 23°C highs.

The administration forecasts nighttime lows of 11 to 13°C in central Taiwan, northern regions, and Yilan, with other areas experiencing 13 to 15°C. Officials urge residents to stay warm and monitor temperature changes. Strengthened northeastern winds increase rain chances in the north, eastern parts, and the Hengchun Peninsula, with persistent rain in areas north of Taoyuan and in Yilan and Hualien. Central and southern regions will see more clouds, and mountain areas may experience scattered showers.

The administration advises carrying rain gear when heading out. Matsu will experience cloudy weather with temperatures from 8 to 13°C, while Kinmen and Penghu enjoy clear skies ranging from 10 to 17°C and 13 to 18°C, respectively. Strong gusts reaching 9 to 10 on the Beaufort scale will affect coastal areas from Miaoli to Yunlin, the Hengchun Peninsula, Orchid Island (蘭嶼), Green Island (綠島), Penghu, and Matsu. Coastal regions from Taoyuan to Tainan and Kinmen will also face strong winds.

The administration cautions those in agriculture and aquaculture to prepare for cold damage and advises proper ventilation when using gas water heaters to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Special attention to keeping warm is recommended for homes with elderly, children, or cardiovascular patients.
