TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The opposition Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislators unveiled a Taiwan Brain Trust (新國會智庫) poll on Thursday (Jan. 9), indicating that 60.9% of respondents oppose the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP, 民進黨) proposal to recall all opposition legislators. Only 27.2% support the initiative.
The poll also revealed mixed opinions on recalling Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜), with 33.7% in favor and 47.3% against. Also, 22.2% of respondents support dissolving the KMT, while 66.4% oppose it. Regarding amendments to the Constitutional Court Procedure Act (憲法訴訟法), 56.7% favor requiring at least 10 Grand Justices (大法官) to attend and 9 to agree to a decision, while 30.6% do not.
Further findings show that 52.9% support amending the Public Officials Election and Recall Act (選罷法) to require ID copies for recall petitions, similar to presidential petitions, with 41.3% opposed. As for revising the Act Governing the Allocation of Government Revenues and Expenditures (財劃法), 47.4% back increasing allocations to counties and cities, while 37.6% do not.
A striking 81.7% endorse establishing a "Judicial Lobbying Crime" law (關說司法罪) to hold judicial lobbying criminally accountable, with only 12.2% against it. KMT Legislator Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) remarked that the DPP should not oppose public opinion, especially on completing the "Judicial Lobbying Crime" legislation.
Meanwhile, KMT Legislator Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) criticized the DPP for opposing public sentiment on significant issues and urged an end to political confrontation. KMT Legislator Liao Wei-hsiang (廖偉翔) accused the DPP of attempting to weaken opposition oversight, which he claims the public perceives.
Chinese Culture University (文化大學) Professor Niu Tse-hsun (鈕則勳) suggested DPP caucus leader Ker Chien-ming (柯建銘) might be engaging in political maneuvering to incite more significant conflict. The survey, conducted by Trend Survey and Research (趨勢民調) from Jan. 6 to 7, sampled 1,078 individuals.
