CHIAYI (TVBS News) — Alishan (阿里山) has earned the 19th spot on The New York Times 2025 Travel Destinations: 52 Places to Go This Year as Taiwan's sole entry. Chiayi County Magistrate on Friday (Jan. 10) celebrated this recognition as a testament to Alishan's rich natural beauty and cultural heritage, calling it "Taiwan's pride."
The Chiayi County Government highlighted Alishan's allure, drawing countless tourists to its magnificent forests, spectacular sunrises, an unpredictable sea of clouds, and unique forest railway. In a press release, officials noted joint efforts by the Alishan National Scenic Area Headquarter (阿里山國家風景區管理處), Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (林業及自然保育署嘉義分署), and Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office (阿里山林業鐵路及文化資產管理處) to enhance the area's infrastructure and services.
The historic Alishan Forest Railway (阿里山林業鐵路), spanning 71.4 kilometers with a 112-year legacy, fully reopened in July 2024 after 15 years of challenging restoration. Chiayi County Magistrate Weng Chang-liang (翁章梁) remarked that the railway's reopening captured international attention, propelling Alishan back onto the global stage. He emphasized Alishan's charm, which is renowned for its natural landscapes and high-quality alpine tea and coffee, which have achieved international acclaim.
Chiayi County's Tsou (鄒族) cultural treasures also offer visitors a unique glimpse into the area's distinct heritage. As Alishan continues to shine on the international scene, the county anticipates further tourism and cultural exchange growth.
