TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC, 金管會) released data on Tuesday (Jan. 14) showing a 5.13% year-on-year increase in credit card spending for November 2024, reaching NT$385.5 billion. Despite a 4.77% monthly decline, the total spending from January to November 2024 reached NT$4.2654 trillion, marking a record high with an 11.07% increase.
The FSC estimates total credit card spending in 2024 could surpass NT$4.6 trillion, setting a new annual record, according to Hou Li-yang (侯立洋), an FSC official. The number of circulating credit cards dropped to 58.62 million by the end of November 2024, a decrease of 40,000 cards, due to ongoing card clearing by banks like First Bank (第一商業銀行) and CTBC Bank (中國信託商業銀行).
However, the number of active cards increased by 190,000, reaching 38.91 million, with an average usage rate of 66.38%, up by 0.37 percentage points. CTBC Bank led the credit card spending in November 2024 with NT$67.632 billion, followed by Cathay United Bank (國泰世華商業銀行股份有限公司) at NT$64.166 billion.
Taipei Fubon Bank (台北富邦銀行), E.SUN Commercial Bank (玉山商業銀行股份有限公司), and Taishin International Bank (台新國際商業銀行) rounded out the top five. As the new year begins, the FSC anticipates further developments in credit card usage trends, which could impact financial strategies for 2025.
