TAIPEI (TVBS News) — China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism (文旅部) announced on Friday (Jan. 17) plans to resume group tours to Taiwan from Fujian and Shanghai, aiming to normalize cross-strait exchanges and respond to the tourism industry's demands.

The ministry's website revealed ongoing preparations and urged the tourism sectors to collaborate and offer quality services for Chinese visitors. The ministry reinstated tourism from Fujian to Matsu and planned to resume group tours to Taiwan after direct sea routes reopened in April 2024. Additionally, Shanghai Vice Mayor Hua Yuan (華源) announced in December 2024 during the Taipei-Shanghai Twin City Forum (雙城論壇)the push for Shanghai residents to visit Taiwan.

Following the announcement, tourism stocks surged at the market's opening. Companies like Star Travel (燦星旅) and Fullon Hotels (富野) hit the daily limit, while others such as ezTravel (易飛網), Lion Travel (五福), and South East Travel (山富) saw significant gains. As of 9:30 a.m., Star Travel (2719) reached NT$46.75, and Fullon Hotels (2736) hit NT$20.9. Other stocks, including ezTravel, rose 8.14% to NT$25.9, and South East Travel increased by 7.71% to NT$97.8.

The ministry emphasized the move would enhance the welfare of people on both sides. This development signals a potential boost for Taiwan's tourism industry as businesses position themselves to accommodate the anticipated influx of Chinese tourists.
