TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌), the legislative caucus leader of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) on Friday (Jan.17), emphasized that the government should adhere to legal principles to maintain public confidence in the judiciary, rather than using it as a political tool.
The Ministry of Justice (法務部) executed death row inmate Huang Lin-kai (黃麟凱) by firing squad on Thursday (Jan. 16) at 10:02 p.m., marking the first execution under President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and following the Constitutional Court's (憲法法庭) September 2024 ruling on the conditional constitutionality of capital punishment.
TPP held the media conference on Friday morning and addressed recent questions. Huang stated that the timing of the Lai administration's execution of the death penalty has sparked public debate, raising questions about whether it was aimed at delivering justice or salvaging approval ratings — an issue worth deep reflection.
During the conference, Huang also outlined the party's stance on the general budget review, highlighting three principles: eliminating unnecessary budget allocations, freezing unclear budget items, and addressing agreed-upon issues.
