TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Keelung Port (基隆港) recorded 331 cruise ship visits and 787,000 passenger arrivals last year, reaching 83% of pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest data from the Port of Keelung Taiwan International Ports Corp. (台灣港務公司基隆分公司) released on Friday (Jan. 17).

As the port is experiencing a strong recovery in international cruise activity, notably, foreign passenger arrivals hit a record high of 266,000, with Japanese visitors leading at 13.75%. Meanwhile, American passengers, traditionally the largest cruise market, showed a slight 9% growth compared to 2018, maintaining stability.

Japanese travelers primarily arrived on the MSC Bellissima (地中海榮耀號), which operated 42 winter sailings, and the Diamond Princess (鑽石公主號), which made four calls. This marked a 67.4% increase from the 2018 peak.

Korean cruise passengers surged by 205.1%, compared to 2018, benefiting from chartered visits by the Costa Serena (歌詩達莎倫娜號) through Korean travel agencies. Taiwan International Ports Corp. has engaged with Lotte Tour, Korea's largest travel agency, to expand Taiwan-Korea cruise routes, capitalizing on the geographical proximity between the two countries.

Looking ahead, Keelung Port has scheduled 472 international cruise ship visits this year, with passenger numbers expected to reach 861,000, reflecting a 9.5% increase from 2024. The port will continue collaborating with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Tourism Administration (交通部觀光署) and local governments to promote regional tourism and enhance port facilities, offering incentives to attract more cruise ships.
