TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's tourism industry is gearing up for a potential influx of visitors from China. Shanghai's tourism sector has begun preparations for a post-Lunar New Year tour in February, according to a media report on Monday (Jan. 20). This would mark the largest such group since the pandemic.

After China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism (文旅部) announced plans to resume group tours from Fujian and Shanghai last Friday, a Shanghai-based Taiwanese businessman confirmed hearing about a planned visit from Taiwan's tourism association representatives to Shanghai, although details remain unclear, United Daily News (聯合報) reported.

Meanwhile, Shanghai tourism insiders revealed ongoing preparations, expressing eagerness following the announcement. The announcement aims to normalize cross-strait exchanges and respond to the anticipation from Taiwan's public and tourism sectors.

Taiwanese tourism operators have already heard of the potential post-Lunar New Year visit. Another Shanghai-based Taiwanese businessman described the announcement as a morale boost for industry stakeholders. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會) welcomed the initiative but awaits detailed implementation plans and communication through the tourism associations of both sides.
