TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) reported on Thursday (Jan. 23) that a weak front passing through Taiwan has resulted in overcast weather and brief rain across the island, with cooler temperatures prevailing. Wu highlighted that this weather pattern marks the beginning of a significant cold spell expected to intensify in the coming days.
Wu forecasted that strong cold air will move south on Sunday, with temperatures starting to plummet on Monday, the eve of the Lunar New Year. He warned that from Tuesday to Thursday, temperatures in lowland areas could drop below 5 degrees Celsius, posing the first cold wave challenge of the winter season.
The meteorologist noted that this morning, mid and low-level clouds prevented nighttime radiative cooling, with the lowest temperature recorded at 12.7 degrees Celsius in Miaoli's Sanwan Township (三灣鄉).
Wu stated that during the weekend, the northeast wind will strengthen, bringing intermittent rain to the north and east, with significant rainfall in the northeast. He added that on Monday, there is a chance of snow flurries on mountains above 2,000 meters, and by evening, temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius will extend to central Taiwan.
