TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) reiterated on Monday (Feb. 3) that Taiwan and China remain distinct entities, urging Taiwanese businesses to recognize Taiwan's foundational role in the Republic of China (ROC, 中華民國).
Lai's remarks came during a speech at the Straits Exchange Foundation's (SEF, 海基會) Lunar New Year event held at the Grand Mayfull Hotel Taipei (台北美福大飯店).
Lai emphasized the nation's sovereignty, stating that it is essential. He highlighted Taiwan's leading economic growth rate of 4.3% among the Four Asian Tigers (亞洲四小龍). He noted the arrival of major international performers from Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. for the New Year's Eve celebrations.
The Taiwanese leader also outlined his presidential responsibilities, focusing on national development, safeguarding citizens' safety, and enhancing defense capabilities. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of aligning with democratic allies and preparing for peace through strength.
Lai also invited sustainable exchanges with China, provided they occur under mutual respect and without preconditions.
