Taichung sees spike in flu vaccine interest after actress’s death (TVBS News)

TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — Taichung's Health Bureau (衛生局) reported on Monday (Feb. 3) a surge in inquiries about flu vaccinations following the death of actress Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛) from pneumonia complications in Japan.

Public Health Centers (衛生所) in Taichung have experienced a flood of calls, reflecting heightened public concern.

The Health Bureau has administered over 776,000 doses of free flu vaccines in Taichung since December last year, with more than 38,000 remaining. Officials encourage citizens to get vaccinated, adding that the flu vaccines have been available to the public, including those over 6 months old, at public health centers and contracted medical institutions.

Staff at Bei-tun District Su-min Public Health Center (北屯區四民衛生所) noted Hsu's death had increased public awareness about vaccination. Personnel at the North District Health Center (北區衛生所) reported constant calls from citizens eager to boost their immunity.

Vaccinations typically occur on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at city health centers. Major hospitals, including Taichung Veterans General Hospital (台中榮總), China Medical University Hospital (中國附醫), Ministry of Health and Welfare Taichung Hospital (衛生福利部臺中醫院), and Taichung Armed Forces General Hospital (國軍台中總醫院), also offer vaccination services.

The Health Bureau emphasized that free and paid vaccines are equally effective, with only brand differences among the five types of vaccines available.
