TAICHUNG (TVBS News)— Taichung's Cheng Ching Hospital (台中澄清醫院) emphasized four flu prevention strategies late Monday (Feb. 3): wearing masks, getting vaccinated, frequent handwashing, and maintaining social distance.
The death of Taiwanese entertainer Barbie Hsu (大S) from flu complications in Japan has sparked a surge in flu vaccination as residents seek to mitigate severe illness risks. In a Facebook post, the hospital stressed that getting vaccinated is currently the most effective method.
Dr. Hui Chun (惠群), director of the internal medicine department at Cheng Ching Hospital Zhonggang Branch (澄清醫院中港院區), warned that flu season peaks during autumn and winter, with increased travel and gatherings during Lunar New Year heightening infection risks. He advised maintaining social distance, washing hands with soap or disinfecting with alcohol sanitizer, and wearing masks properly to protect oneself and family. He emphasized the importance of wearing masks when experiencing respiratory symptoms to prevent spreading the virus.
Family medicine physician Liao Yen-hui (廖彥惠) urged the public to take advantage of expanded free flu vaccinations available to all ages starting Jan. 1. Those who haven't received a flu shot should consult with doctors about the free vaccine, available until supplies last, and consider pneumococcal vaccination for those 65 and older. Dr. Liao reminded travelers to get vaccinated 14 days before departure for optimal protection.
Dr. Hui Chun also noted that early flu symptoms resemble a common cold but can escalate to severe issues like difficulty breathing or confusion. High-risk groups, including the elderly and those with chronic illnesses, should prioritize hygiene and health to prevent complications such as pneumonia or organ failure. He recommended avoiding pathogen exposure and managing chronic conditions while using vaccines to shield against flu and other respiratory infections.
