NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News)— The New Taipei City's Social Welfare Department (社會局) reported on Friday (Feb. 7) that it has reached out to elderly residents living alone and the homeless as the latest cold snap sweeps through Taiwan.

Since Jan. 24, relentless cold waves have gripped New Taipei City, prompting the department to roll out extensive care measures. It has recorded 28,832 instances of outreach, including phone check-ins with those who live alone and meal deliveries.

The department has also distributed 1,515 warm clothing items to the homeless. During the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday period, Banqiao District's (板橋區) outreach service center has also operated a hot meal station continuously. It has since assisted 11 individuals with temporary housing, while two were hospitalized.

Lee Mei-chen (李美珍), head of the department, emphasized the city's commitment to safeguarding the homeless.

Efforts to support the elderly involved mobilizing district offices, volunteers, and local leaders to provide reassurance through phone calls and in-person visits. The initiatives offered care packages and cold-weather health information to elderly residents.

The department urged residents to dress warmly and remain vigilant about safety when using heating devices. They advised checking electrical connections and ensuring proper ventilation. In emergencies, residents should contact security or dial 119 for assistance.
