TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, 外交部) expressed sincere gratitude and affirmation toward U.S. President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's steadfast stance on maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait on Saturday (Feb. 8).

Trump and Ishiba issued a joint statement after their summit in Washington a day earlier. The two leaders opposed any attempts by China to alter the status quo through force or coercion and supported Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations.

MOFA pointed out that as a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will actively implement the "Four Pillars of Peace" action plan." The ministry emphasized its commitment to enhancing self-defense capabilities and collaborating with like-minded partners such as the U.S. and Japan to ensure peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.

The joint statement also highlighted strong opposition to China's use of force or coercion in challenging the status quo in the East China Sea. The leaders condemned China's illegal claims, militarization, and provocative actions in the South China Sea. This historic meeting marked the first encounter between the U.S. and Japanese leaders since taking office.

The ministry welcomed the continued international attention to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and expressed concern over China's actions threatening the current peaceful situation. Taiwan remains committed to strengthening its defense and working with international partners to uphold regional security.
