YUNLIN (TVBS News) — Cabbage prices plummeted in Taiwan following the Lunar New Year, prompting farmers to take unconventional measures. A farmer in Yunlin County opened his field to the public on Tuesday (Feb. 11), allowing people to pick cabbages themselves for just NT$10 each.
Many local residents rushed to harvest and quickly cleared all 2,000 cabbages at the field in Linnei Township (林內鄉), with enthusiastic individuals arriving with large bags and exclaiming about the bargain.
Market data showed that cabbage prices fell to NT$7.5 per kilogram, a 20-fold decrease from last year's peak of over NT$300. Chen Tsai-cheng (陳再成), the field owner, explained that he allowed self-picking because he couldn't harvest the entire crop himself. By selling some, he hoped to cover the cost of fertilizer.
Meanwhile, Cheng Hsin-yen (程信彥), deputy manager of the "Xiluo Fruit and Vegetable Market" (西螺果菜市場), noted that cabbage prices soared during typhoon season, reaching NT$30-40 per kilogram; however, current prices hover around NT$10.
