TAIPEI (TVBS News) — U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a review of trade partners' "unfair" practices against the U.S. on Thursday (Feb. 13), proposing tariffs on chips to address the imbalance. Trump specifically mentioned Taiwan, accusing it of "taking semiconductor chip business away", and he wanted it back.
Trump reiterated that nearly all chips are produced in Taiwan, with some exceptions in South Korea, and expressed a desire for these companies to set up operations in the U.S. He stated that automakers, semiconductor, and chip manufacturers can avoid tariffs if they establish factories in the U.S.
Trump signed a "presidential memorandum" (總統備忘錄) directing administrations, including the Department of Treasury, to develop a "Fair and Reciprocal Plan" (公平與對等計畫) to correct international trade disparities.
