TAIPEI (TVBS News)— Taiwan's legislators expressed their appreciation on Monday (Feb. 17) regarding the U.S. State Department's recent update, which saw the removal of previous statements not supporting Taiwan independence in the U.S.-Taiwan relationship section on the official website.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) highlighted the U.S.'s shift to continuously support Taiwan's participation in international organizations with official membership when it is applicable. Wang noted that the U.S. now defines Taiwan as a democratic political entity and a tech-leading nation, marking a significant policy shift in the State Department's documentation.

Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) legislator Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) suggested that U. S. President Donald Trump's Taiwan policy might be part of a broader U.S.-China negotiation strategy, predicting potential policy changes. She stressed that Taiwan should focus on practical issues, such as the impact of Trump's proposed reciprocal tariffs on Taiwanese industries, urging the government to formulate relevant countermeasures.

Meanwhile, Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) legislative caucus leader and Chairman Huang Kuo-chang (黃國昌) expressed gratitude for the continued U.S. support, aligning with the party's basic policy principles. Huang hopes to promote talent flow between Taiwan and the U.S. and welcomes U.S. support for Taiwan's meaningful international participation.

The U.S. Department of State revised its statement on its website of U.S. Relations with Taiwan on Feb. 13.  The updated content strengthens support for Taiwan's international participation, including cooperation with the Pentagon. The latest version emphasizes resolving cross-strait differences in a non-coercive and acceptable manner for both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
