KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — A recent diarrhea outbreak at the Naval Academy in Nanzih District (楠梓區) affected 151 individuals on Feb. 15 and has spurred swift action from the Kaohsiung City Government's Department of Health (高雄市政府衛生局), leading to a thorough epidemiological investigation and intensified environmental sanitation measures.
The health department confirmed on Sunday (Feb. 23) that no new cases have emerged since Feb. 20. They plan to continue health monitoring of affected individuals and their contacts until Feb. 26. Meanwhile, the Air Force Academy in Gangshan District (岡山區) reported a similar situation on Feb. 21, with four students showing symptoms. These cases, however, did not meet the threshold for a formal outbreak declaration.
Officials noted that the close living quarters of military academy students necessitate ongoing surveillance of the situation. At the Naval Academy, students who sought medical attention last week for gastrointestinal issues were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis. They have since recovered and returned to campus. The academy has ruled out food poisoning as the cause, pending further laboratory tests to determine the exact source.
As investigations continue, health officials remain committed to ensuring the well-being of students and staff. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
