TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of the Interior (MOI, 內政部) announced on Monday (Feb. 24) that the current 11 nationwide holidays comply with a legislative resolution passed in 2000, emphasizing that these holidays align with existing regulations. The National Federation of Teachers Unions (全國教師工會總聯合會) held a press conference on Friday (Feb. 21) with cross-party legislators to call for the official recognition of Labor Day and Teachers' Day as holidays.
The ministry noted that nine commemorative and festival days currently qualify for holidays, in addition to a three-day Lunar New Year break. This results in a total of 115 to 116 holidays annually. The MOI explained that the Legislative Yuan amended the Public Functionary Service Act in 2000 to maintain traditional holidays, coinciding with the adoption of a two-day weekend for civil servants. To protect citizens' holiday rights, the ministry revised regulations in 2014 to ensure that holidays falling on weekends are observed on weekdays instead.
Following amendments to the "Labor Standards Act" (勞動基準法) in 2016, which introduced a one-day-off policy per week for workers, the holiday schedules for civil servants and laborers have gradually aligned. The ministry reiterated that the total number of holidays, ranging from 115 to 116 days, meets legislative requirements and pledged to continue gathering feedback to build consensus.
