KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — The race to combat the flu in Kaohsiung saw health officials use up their entire stock of 12,270 government-funded vaccines by Monday (Feb. 24), a supply sourced from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾病管制署). Starting on Feb. 20, the city's Department of Health targeted 11 eligible groups, striving to halt the spread of the virus in the region.
The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾病管制署) expanded the eligibility for government-funded antiviral flu medications from Dec. 15 to March 15. This expansion includes individuals showing flu-like symptoms whose family members, coworkers, or classmates have contracted the flu. According to the city's health department, Kaohsiung still has over 60,000 doses of these antiviral medications, ensuring a sufficient supply.
The health bureau has advised residents to maintain good hand hygiene and practice proper cough etiquette amid recent temperature fluctuations. Officials also urge those experiencing flu-like symptoms, such as fever, to seek medical attention promptly. They recommend citizens follow doctors' prescriptions for antiviral treatments to prevent infections or severe complications.
As Kaohsiung navigates the flu season, residents must remain vigilant and take preventive measures. The city's proactive approach to expanding medication access and encouraging public health practices reflects a commitment to safeguarding public health.
