TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As dawn broke over Taipei's Xinyi District on Wednesday (March 12), drone pilot Hommer Shen (沈張鴻) and his team were ready. Their patience and preparation paid off with a spectacular aerial image: the iconic Taipei 101 (台北101) tower rising majestically through a blanket of low-hanging clouds, creating an otherworldly scene that has captivated viewers across Taiwan.

The ethereal video, which shows Taiwan's tallest building appearing to float above the clouds, was no accident. Shen attributed the remarkable shot to a deliberate combination of elements he considers essential for exceptional drone imagery: precise timing, strategic location selection, and harmony with environmental conditions.

Shen's journey to this moment began eight years ago when he made a pivotal career decision, selling his conventional photography equipment to invest entirely in drone technology after recognizing its potential to offer unprecedented visual perspectives.

The breathtaking Taipei 101 shot required extensive preparation. Shen meticulously analyzed meteorological data that indicated favorable conditions for low cloud formation between late March 10 and early March 11. Acting on this forecast, he positioned himself strategically near the shooting location well in advance, ensuring he could respond instantly when the perfect atmospheric conditions materialized.

Operating in Taipei's dense urban environment presented significant technical and regulatory challenges. Shen noted that the proximity to Taipei Songshan Airport (松山機場) imposed strict limitations, including a 60-meter maximum altitude restriction for drone flights. These constraints required him to secure advance permissions and carefully plan his flight path to remain in compliance while still achieving the desired composition.

The photographer's expertise is backed by formal education. Currently enrolled in the Master Program of UAV Application and Precision Agriculture at National Ilan University (國立宜蘭大學), Shen has transformed his passion for drone photography into a professional career. His portfolio includes significant projects across Taiwan, from the scenic landscapes of Yilan to documenting major infrastructure developments like the opening of the Kinmen Bridge in 2022.

Despite his success, Shen expressed frustration with Taiwan's regulatory environment for drone operators. He described the current permit process as excessively lengthy and the regulations as overly stringent, advocating for government officials to develop more balanced policies that consider the practical needs and perspectives of professional drone operators while maintaining necessary safety standards.
