TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese badminton player Wang Tzu-wei (王子維) decisively defeated world No. 3 Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the men's singles round of 16 at the prestigious All England Open Badminton Championships on Thursday (March 13) in a stunning display of skill and determination. Wang dominated the match with commanding scores of 21-10 and 21-13, advancing to the quarterfinals and matching his career-best performance at this elite tournament.
The victory marks a significant turnaround in Wang's competitive history against Antonsen. Despite entering the match with a 3-4 head-to-head disadvantage and having lost their three previous encounters, Wang showed remarkable poise throughout the Super 1000 series event in Birmingham. He established his dominance early, building an impressive 8-3 lead in the opening game before closing it out convincingly at 21-10.
Wang maintained his momentum in the second game, unleashing a devastating six-point streak that left the Danish star struggling to respond. By the technical timeout, Wang had established a commanding 11-4 lead. Though Antonsen mounted a brief comeback to narrow the gap to 11-13, Wang's superior play prevailed as he sealed the match with a decisive 21-13 finish.
The win continues what has already been a promising season for Wang, who reached the semifinals at the Indonesia Masters earlier this year. His quarterfinal journey will continue against French rising star Alex Lanier, with a coveted semifinal berth at stake in one of badminton's most historic tournaments.
Taiwan's excellence extended to the men's doubles competition as well, with two national pairs securing quarterfinal positions. The duos of Lee Jhe-huei (李哲輝) and Yang Po-hsuan (楊博軒), alongside Yang Po-han (楊博涵) and Liu Kuan-hao (劉廣珩), both advanced to the final eight, highlighting Taiwan's growing strength across multiple badminton disciplines on the international stage.
