Mall tragedy prompts safety upgrades (TVBS News)

TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — A popular shopping complex in central Taiwan became the site of yet another tragedy early Friday (April 11) when a young woman plunged to her death, marking the third fatal fall at the location in less than two months. The 26-year-old woman died at Park Lane by CMP (勤美誠品綠園), an upscale retail center in Taichung, Taiwan's second-largest city. Management has announced plans to upgrade existing safety barriers with reinforced iron mesh following this latest incident, which comes just 47 days after the first death occurred.

Emergency responders discovered the woman shortly after 1 a.m. lying outside a coffee shop chain with critical head trauma. According to authorities, she had deliberately breached safety installations by slicing through protective netting with a utility knife. The Taichung City Fire Bureau (台中市消防局) arrived at 1:14 a.m., but medical intervention proved futile, and she was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. This incident follows two previous fatal falls at the same shopping center: a male victim who fell from the 11th-floor parking structure on Feb. 24, and a 23-year-old woman who fell from the identical location on March 18.

Mall management issued a statement expressing profound grief and extending condolences to the victim's family, noting they had implemented enhanced safety measures between March 21 and March 27 following the previous incidents. These precautions ultimately proved insufficient when deliberately circumvented, as occurred in this latest case. Shopping center representatives appealed to the public to value life and seek professional assistance during difficult times, pledging continued cooperation with mental health resources and government agencies. Their statement also included a plea against circulating unsubstantiated rumors about the incidents, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a supportive and fact-based public discourse during this sensitive period.
