TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is experiencing a marked warming trend as the northeast monsoon loses strength, the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) announced Monday (April 14). Residents across the island face substantial temperature fluctuations between day and night, with northern regions and Yilan dropping to 12 degrees Celsius (53.6°F). Central areas, Hualien, and Taitung will see lows of 15 to 16°C (59-60.8°F), while southern regions will experience milder overnight temperatures of 18 to 19°C (64.4-66.2°F).
Daytime temperatures will climb to between 26 and 29°C (78.8-84.2°F) in northern Taiwan and Yilan, while central and southern regions will warm to 29 to 30°C (84.2-86°F). The eastern counties of Hualien and Taitung will remain slightly cooler with highs of 24 to 25°C (75.2-77°F). Weather officials are urging commuters to dress in layers, particularly those traveling in early morning or evening hours. The outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu will experience partly cloudy skies with temperatures ranging from 15 to 26°C (59-78.8°F).
Most of Taiwan will enjoy sunny to partly cloudy conditions as the northeast monsoon continues to weaken, though southeastern areas and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) may experience isolated showers. Meteorologists note that shifting wind patterns could bring strong southwesterly gusts to coastal Taoyuan, the Hengchun Peninsula, and Orchid Island (蘭嶼), a small island off Taiwan's southeastern coast. The Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (環境部空氣品質預報) has issued an advisory, warning that westerly to southwesterly winds might transport pollutants toward the island, with potential impacts varying based on rainfall patterns and upstream pollution concentrations.
Air quality across several counties — Hsinchu, Miaoli, Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung — is currently rated as "Moderate," according to environmental officials. Northern regions, along with parts of Hsinchu and Miaoli counties, could temporarily deteriorate to "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" levels as the day progresses. The situation appears more concerning for western and southern Taiwan, with Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung counties, as well as the outlying islands of Matsu, Kinmen, and Penghu, already under an "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" air quality alert. ★
