TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has completed initial trade negotiations with Washington as the island seeks to protect its economic interests amid growing global protectionism. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) revealed Monday (April 14) that the first round of talks with U.S. officials concluded with a focus on preserving Taiwan's industrial development priorities. The president framed ongoing trade tensions as potential catalysts for economic transformation rather than insurmountable obstacles.

The president outlined a comprehensive economic strategy designed to reposition Taiwan amid shifting global trade dynamics. "We will promote a new layout," President Lai said, describing efforts to strengthen domestic industries while simultaneously deepening U.S. partnerships. He touted Taiwan's recent economic performance, noting that the island outpaced all other "Four Asian Tigers" (亞洲四小龍, referring to Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong) in growth last year, with success evident in both financial markets and cultural sectors.

Tax revenues will be strategically channeled toward economic infrastructure and business support programs, according to President Lai's fiscal blueprint. The administration plans particular focus on high-tech sectors and smaller enterprises while simultaneously advancing Taiwan's self-defense capabilities. Lai linked economic resilience directly to national security, emphasizing that "Taiwan must rely on its strength to achieve peace." The government has earmarked NT$88 billion (US$2.7 billion) to counter U.S. tariff impacts and bolster businesses affected by recent economic headwinds. ★
