TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) showcased his administration's ambitious sports infrastructure achievements Thursday (May 8) at the National Sports Center construction exhibition, emphasizing the city's growing capacity to host international sporting competitions. The public exhibition, which highlights the development of 18 municipal sports facilities across Taiwan's most populous city, offers free admission through May 21.
New Taipei City has systematically developed its athletic facilities since 2011, constructing a network of 16 sports centers and two specialized aquatic centers — the largest such municipal system in Taiwan. Feng Chao-lin (馮兆麟), director of New Taipei's Public Works Department (工務局), the city agency responsible for infrastructure development, noted that each facility features contemporary architectural designs with amenities specifically configured to complement the distinct needs of individual districts.
Visitors to the exhibition will find detailed architectural renderings, comprehensive construction timelines, and intricate scale models representing eight of the most distinctive sports complexes. The carefully curated displays serve to educate residents about New Taipei's rapid sports infrastructure expansion. Officials frame the exhibition as a prelude to the prestigious 2025 World Masters Games (雙北世界壯年運動會), scheduled for May 17-30, which will bring approximately 25,000 international competitors from 107 nations to Taiwan for what officials describe as the island's largest-ever international sporting competition. ★
