TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A heat wave grips Taiwan amid mostly sunny skies, Taiwan's national meteorological agency reported Thursday (May 15). The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) warns that eastern regions and the southern Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) should expect brief showers, while afternoon thunderstorms may develop over Greater Taipei and mountainous terrain.
Mercury levels have surged across the island, with daytime temperatures reaching 30 to 34 degrees Celsius (86 to 93.2°F). Southern mountainous areas could bake at up to 36°C (96.8°F), leading health officials to urge limited outdoor exposure. Authorities recommend consistent hydration and sun protection as evening temperatures will remain warm, dropping only to 20-24°C (68-75.2°F).
The offshore island of Matsu faces potential transportation disruptions as nighttime fog and low cloud formations threaten visibility. Officials advise travelers to check flight status regularly. Meanwhile, the Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network (環境部空氣品質預報), the island's atmospheric monitoring authority, detected poor air circulation along western Taiwan's leeward areas, where afternoon sunlight has triggered chemical reactions elevating ozone concentrations.
Eastern counties Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung enjoy "Good" air quality ratings, offering a stark contrast to conditions elsewhere. Most of Taiwan's populous regions — including the northern areas, tech hub Hsinchu, agricultural Miaoli, and southern metropolitan zones — currently experience conditions "unhealthy for sensitive groups." Matsu maintains "moderate" air quality. Health officials emphasize continued monitoring for vulnerable populations. ◼
