TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's chief trade negotiator is advancing bilateral talks with American counterparts while attending a regional economic forum in South Korea, Deputy Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君) announced Friday (May 16). Yang Jen-ni (楊珍妮), Taiwan's top trade representative, has initiated discussions with U.S. officials at the APEC trade ministers' meeting on Jeju Island, seeking to fortify economic partnerships.

The deputy premier conveyed optimism about the diplomatic exchange, noting that Yang described the atmosphere as "friendly and constructive." Both sides have acknowledged significant progress since initial negotiations concluded in late April. Cheng underscored Taiwan's commitment to pursuing economic policies that generate mutual benefits, emphasizing that negotiators have clearly articulated the island's priorities in these high-stakes discussions.

The bilateral discussions have covered a comprehensive range of trade issues including tariff structures, non-tariff barriers that impede market access, and broader economic security concerns, according to Cheng. She specifically noted that currency-related matters were not part of the current negotiation agenda, suggesting a focused approach to resolving trade frictions.

Both nations have signaled eagerness to reconvene discussions promptly while maintaining open communication channels, Cheng emphasized. Taiwan's negotiation strategy remains firmly anchored in protecting domestic industries and ensuring public health standards are not compromised. The government views these talks as crucial for strengthening Taiwan's global economic standing and creating favorable conditions for industrial advancement in international markets.

The current round of negotiations builds on recent diplomatic momentum, following the United States' April 9 decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs. Taiwan quickly responded with a virtual meeting on April 11, which led to substantive face-to-face talks in Washington during the final days of April. These ongoing discussions represent a significant step in resolving trade tensions between the two economies. ◼
