TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei's Department of Labor (勞動局), the city's workforce regulatory agency, confirmed on Tuesday (May 28) that Global Village Organization (地球村) has failed to pay its employees on time. Officials launched a formal labor inspection last Thursday following an employee complaint filed on May 8, uncovering what appears to be widespread financial distress affecting both staff members and external creditors.
Investigators believe the organization is grappling with severe financial troubles that have left it unable to meet its obligations. According to labor officials, the nonprofit owes more than NT$15 million (US$502,445) to a local dentist and has failed to pay salaries to over 20 employees. With unpaid wages at the organization's headquarters alone totaling millions of New Taiwan dollars, labor authorities are now weighing penalties between NT$20,000 (US$670) and NT$1 million (US$33,496) under Taiwan's Labor Standards Act (勞動基準法).
The financial crisis has apparently spilled over into physical confrontation. A Taipei dentist recently reported being assaulted by a man over outstanding debts connected to the Global Village Organization, explicitly stating the attack was financially motivated rather than stemming from any medical disagreement. This troubling incident suggests the organization's monetary problems may be triggering more serious consequences beyond missed paychecks.
Labor officials emphasized that their investigation has uncovered evidence pointing to a critical financial situation at the organization. The department's findings could trigger significant legal consequences for Global Village Organization's leadership, potentially extending beyond administrative penalties to more serious charges if authorities determine the wage delays constitute intentional violations of labor laws. "This is not merely an administrative matter," a department spokesperson noted. ◼
