TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan faces a sweltering Friday (June 6) with scattered thunderstorms sweeping across the island as moisture-laden southwesterly winds dominate weather patterns, meteorologists warned. Huang En-hung (黃恩鴻), a forecaster at the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署), Taiwan's national weather agency, indicated that western regions would see intermittent morning showers while the remainder of the island would experience predominantly cloudy conditions punctuated by brief periods of sunshine throughout the day.
The unsettled weather conditions will continue through the weekend and into early next week, according to Huang, with a mix of cloudy and clear periods accompanied by localized afternoon downpours from June 7 to 9. Weather officials emphasized that heavy rainfall locations would shift daily, requiring residents across the island to remain alert to changing conditions. Adding to concerns, the CWA has identified a potential tropical disturbance forming over waters between the Philippine Sea and South China Sea that could affect regional weather patterns as it develops throughout the weekend.
Weather officials are particularly concerned about conditions after June 10, with Huang advising the public to exercise heightened vigilance as the tropical disturbance shows potential to strengthen into a more organized tropical depression or possibly develop into a typhoon. Despite the cloud cover, oppressive heat will persist across Taiwan with temperatures ranging from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius (86 to 89.6°F) island-wide. The situation appears even more severe for residents in the Greater Taipei Basin (大台北盆地), the densely populated metropolitan region surrounding the capital, and the eastern Huadong Valley, where temperatures could climb even higher in the coming days. ◼
