TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's government unveiled an ambitious decarbonization strategy Thursday (June 12), as the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) announced comprehensive social engagement efforts to advance the island's green energy transition. The ministry revealed it had conducted crucial stakeholder meetings Sunday and Monday to discuss six flagship decarbonization plans, encompassing cutting-edge hydrogen energy supply chains and advanced technology storage solutions. The initiative represents a strategic effort to engage local governments while expanding geothermal development through an innovative regulatory sandbox mechanism designed to accelerate clean energy deployment.
The ministry's comprehensive outreach included five specialized focus meetings conducted on May 19 addressing critical solar photovoltaic and offshore wind power development topics across Taiwan. Officials demonstrated strong commitment to integrating participant feedback systematically to optimize information disclosure processes and ensure local residents receive comprehensive, accessible information about energy projects. The statement highlighted President Lai Ching-te's (賴清德) establishment of the National Climate Change Committee (國家氣候變遷對策委員會) to develop Taiwan's ambitious new carbon reduction targets for 2030. The MOEA received specific assignments to promote diverse green energy initiatives while establishing regular communication and collaboration mechanisms with stakeholders.
Vice Minister Lai Chien-hsin (賴建信) emphasized Taiwan's distinctive geological characteristics, stressing that green energy development must achieve careful harmony with the island's natural environment and scenic landscapes. The vice minister announced that authorities would implement comprehensive risk assessments and establish detailed green energy development guidelines for future projects. The ministry scheduled continuation of its social communication discussions focusing on offshore wind power and solar photovoltaic initiatives for June 16 and 17. These upcoming meetings will systematically address current promotional challenges while gathering valuable insights from participants to refine energy sector flagship plans and enhance information transparency for local communities. ◼
