TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) announced on Sunday (Jun 15) that it has added 601 entities to its export control list, including Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies (華為技術) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC, 中芯國際). The ministry cited these companies' involvement in military expansion activities as the primary reason for the restrictions, marking a significant escalation in Taiwan's technology export controls.

Bloomberg News reported that Taiwan specifically blacklisted these Chinese companies for their involvement in developing advanced artificial intelligence chip technology, a sector with significant military applications. The MOEA has issued a directive to Taiwanese firms, urging them to obtain a strategic high-tech goods export license from the International Trade Administration (國貿署), the bureau responsible for overseeing Taiwan's international trade policies, before conducting any business with entities appearing on the control list.

The International Trade Administration released a comprehensive news statement on June 10 detailing the expansion of the control list to include entities from multiple countries of concern, including Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Myanmar, and China. Taiwan's customs officials have been instructed to strengthen border inspection protocols and will refuse clearance for any unauthorized exports destined for the listed entities, creating a multi-layered enforcement mechanism to prevent sensitive technology transfers.

The International Trade Administration has issued a reminder to all Taiwanese companies about the importance of complying with export control regulations and announced plans to conduct informational seminars to help businesses navigate these complex rules. Operating under the authority granted by Article 13 of Taiwan's Foreign Trade Act (貿易法), the administration regularly updates its management list of strategic high-tech goods exports by referencing sanctions and control lists from the United Nations Security Council and allied nations. With this latest addition, the comprehensive control list now encompasses 10,844 entities and individuals worldwide. ◼
