TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation (台北農產運銷公司) reported a drop in vegetable prices and a rise in fruit prices on Tuesday (July 8).
Typhoon Danas severely impacted key agricultural areas in Chiayi and Tainan, with strong winds and heavy rain disrupting supply and affecting produce availability. However, the corporation noted that if weather conditions remain stable later this year, overall agricultural output should not be significantly affected
The vegetable transaction volume reached 1,374 metric tons, with an average price of NT$36.30 per kilogram, down from NT$37.24 per kilogram the previous day. Lu Chuan-li (路全利), deputy general manager at Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation, noted that Chiayi and Tainan experienced the most severe impact, with a 15% reduction in leafy vegetable production. However, cabbage remained unaffected due to its primary cultivation in the highlands of Yilan.
Fruit transactions increased, reaching 678 metric tons, with prices rising to NT$54.9 per kilogram from NT$52.23. Tainan's pomelo crops suffered the most, with about 70% of the fruit falling prematurely. Despite this, other regions like Hualien cushioned the overall production decline to approximately 40%- 50%.
