TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Mai Yu-chen (麥玉珍), a legislator from the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨), defended her writing skills Thursday (July 10) amid criticism from Sanlih E-Television (SET, 三立) host Li Cheng-hao (李正皓). Mai stated that she writes so that she understands it herself. Many people type now, so many might not be able to write.
TPP protested at the National Communications Commission (NCC, 國家通訊傳播委員會) a day earlier, accusing Li of discriminating against new immigrants by mocking Mai's Chinese proficiency. Mai responded on Facebook, emphasizing that a legislator's capabilities should not be equated with language skills.
Since taking office, Mai has consistently advocated for new immigrants and local communities. She cited her efforts to promote the New Immigrants Basic Act (新住民基本法) and her contributions as the head of the Nantou Party Department.
Li countered by pointing out that the characters Mai struggled with or wrote incorrectly are from elementary school textbooks. He criticized the TPP for selecting her as a legislator, which he described as "a disgrace for Taiwan."
