TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese technology giant Wistron Corporation (緯創) launched construction of an advanced research facility in Taipei's thriving tech district on Monday (July 14), reinforcing the capital city's ambitions to become a regional innovation hub. The groundbreaking ceremony drew high-profile attendees including Wistron President Jeff Lin (林建勳) and Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安), who highlighted the project's significance for the city's technological ecosystem. The development, slated for completion in 2028, represents a major expansion of Taiwan's research infrastructure.
The multi-level research complex will rise eight stories above ground with four additional basement levels, according to details shared by Wistron's president. Lin explained that the facility will meet rigorous gold-grade environmental and smart building certifications while encompassing approximately 9,425 square feet of floor space. Taipei's mayor framed the investment as a vote of confidence in the city's economic trajectory, highlighting the project's potential to generate 1,500 new employment opportunities in the high-tech sector.
The municipal government envisions transforming Taipei into an artificial intelligence-powered smart city, according to Mayor Chiang. Officials are developing an integrated technology corridor connecting three existing innovation zones: Nangang Software Park (南港軟體園區), Neihu Technology Park (內湖科技園區), and Beitou-Shilin Technology Park (北投士林科技園區). Wistron's expansion aligns with these urban development goals, as the company has announced plans for a dedicated AI corridor in the Neihu district, complemented by its subsidiary Wiwynn Corporation (緯穎) constructing its own facility in the vicinity. ◼
