TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) announced on Tuesday (July 15) that the National Climate Change Committee (國家氣候變遷對策委員會), the island's highest climate policy coordination body, will hold its fifth meeting on July 24. Peng shared this information while speaking to reporters before the "Taiwan Green Growth Series Forum" (台灣綠色成長系列論壇), a sustainability conference focused on environmental challenges.
During the upcoming committee meeting, Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior (內政部) will spearhead discussions on implementing net-zero building standards as part of the island's climate adaptation strategy. Peng confirmed that Eugene Chien (簡又新), chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (台灣永續能源研究基金會), a leading environmental think tank, has been invited to present comprehensive data on long-term climate trends and propose strategic responses to Taiwan's growing environmental challenges.
The Ministry of Environment (環境部) will also unveil research findings detailing the interconnections between carbon emissions, deteriorating air quality, and public health impacts across the island. Officials are expected to outline comprehensive mitigation strategies that align with Taiwan's broader climate goals while addressing the immediate health concerns of citizens living in industrial zones and urban centers.
The upcoming session marks the fifth gathering of the National Climate Change Committee since its formation. At its third meeting on January 23, the committee introduced Taiwan's ambitious New Carbon Reduction (NDC3.0) framework, establishing targets to slash carbon emissions by approximately 32% by 2032 and 38% by 2035, using 2005 levels as the baseline. These goals represent Taiwan's most aggressive climate commitments to date, positioning the island to contribute meaningfully to global emissions reduction efforts despite its diplomatic isolation.
