KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) voiced skepticism about Taiwan's national cash handout program on Wednesday (July 16). The mayor called for thorough economic analysis before implementing the controversial initiative. The Legislative Yuan (立法院), Taiwan's parliament, approved the plan last Friday to distribute NT$10,000 (approximately US$341) to each citizen, igniting heated political discussions across the island.
During a morning public appearance in Kaohsiung, Taiwan's largest southern port city, Chen drew attention to the continuing Taiwan-U.S. tariff negotiations. The mayor noted these crucial trade talks have yet to reach conclusion. He recommended that the Executive Yuan (行政院), Taiwan's cabinet, and the Legislative Yuan engage in further deliberations. These discussions would evaluate potential consequences for different economic sectors once the final tariff arrangements are established.
The Kaohsiung mayor stressed the critical role of thoughtful legislative deliberation in economic policy. He argued that a measured approach would strengthen Taiwan's financial foundation. Chen suggested this would help the island prepare for potential economic shifts in the coming months. The mayor emphasized that ongoing policy discussions should prioritize aligning stimulus measures with the nation's long-term fiscal wellbeing rather than pursuing short-term political gains through cash distributions. ◼
