TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's aviation industry reached a significant environmental milestone Wednesday (July 23) when EVA Air (長榮航空) signed a groundbreaking agreement with Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (台塑石化公司, FPCC) to purchase over 20,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel over five years. The partnership represents Taiwan's largest domestic sustainable aviation fuel deal and aims to reduce carbon emissions by at least 50,000 tons starting in 2026.
EVA Air President Sun Chia-ming (孫嘉明) emphasized the carrier's commitment to environmental protection and social responsibility through sustainable aviation fuel usage, reducing single-use plastics onboard, and promoting green transportation initiatives. The airline's environmental strategy reflects Taiwan's broader push toward carbon neutrality and sustainable business practices across major industries.
FPCC President Lin Keh-yen (林克彥) stated that this collaboration helps integrate resources and technology from both parties to build a more competitive, sustainable aviation fuel industry value chain. The petrochemical giant produces sustainable aviation fuel using co-refining technology and internationally certified waste cooking oil as bio-based material. FPCC expects to reach an annual production capacity of 50,000 tons by 2030.
China Airlines (華航), Taiwan's flag carrier, also signed a memorandum of understanding with FPCC to purchase over 10,000 tons of domestically produced sustainable aviation fuel over three years, targeting carbon reduction of 26,000 tons. The airline has focused on international sustainable aviation fuel development since 2013, becoming Taiwan's first national carrier to incorporate sustainable fuel into new aircraft deliveries and commercial passenger flights in 2017. ◼ (At time of reporting, 1 euro equals approximately NT$34.48)
