TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署) announced Thursday (July 24) that a tropical depression near Guam has strengthened into tropical storm Krosa, becoming the ninth typhoon of this active season. The weather agency plans to issue an official typhoon formation alert to inform the public of the developing storm system. However, meteorological experts predict Krosa will have no direct impact on Taiwan's current weather patterns.
Forecaster Tseng Chao-cheng (曾昭誠) emphasized that Krosa remains far from Taiwan, ensuring no immediate weather disruptions across the island. Two additional tropical storms, Francisco and CO-MAY, formed consecutively just one day earlier, creating a cluster of weather systems. Francisco currently sits 670 kilometers (416 miles) east of Taipei, advancing west-northwest at speeds between 17 to 21 kilometers per hour (11-13 mph).
CO-MAY remains positioned 680 kilometers (422 miles) south-southwest of Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan's southernmost point, moving northeast to north-northeast at 10 to 22 kilometers per hour (6-14 mph). The Central Weather Administration evaluated that Typhoon Krosa will likely track toward Japan's southeastern waters. This projected path effectively spares Taiwan from experiencing any direct weather disturbances or significant atmospheric changes.
Residents and local authorities are strongly advised to monitor official weather channels as these multiple storm systems continue developing. The simultaneous formation of several typhoons across the western Pacific region highlights the critical importance of maintaining preparedness protocols. This particularly active typhoon season demands heightened vigilance from both emergency management officials and the general public throughout Taiwan. ◼
